Assistance for Non-Tenure-Track Faculty Members and for Unemployed Members Attending the January 2024 Convention
The Executive Council has voted to allot funds to provide partial travel reimbursement of $400 to non-tenure-track faculty members and those without employment to attend the annual MLA convention. To be eligible, applicants must be current MLA members and must have been members the previous year. They must be non-tenure-track faculty members or be unemployed. Their income must place them in dues class B or 1. Applicants may only receive the convention grant once every three years. Funds are available to cover a limited number of awards.
Non-tenure-track faculty members and unemployed members may apply online from early September through 1 November. As part of the application process, members are expected to request matching funds from their departments or institutions by using a letter provided by the MLA (available here). The council wants to make institutions aware of the importance of supporting all instructional staff members in their professional development activities. The institution’s response must be presented when grant recipients hand in their materials at the convention, even if no matching funds are granted. For further information, write the office of programs (awards@mla.org).
Those who wish to donate money to a professional education assistance fund that will provide ongoing support for these attendance reimbursements may do so online or on their MLA membership renewal form.
MLA members who serve on council-appointed standing committees or on the Delegate Assembly may apply for a convention grant each year of their term. Only those who meet all eligibility requirements can receive a grant. To apply for a grant, these members should write to awards@mla.org.
Limited funding is available to support attendance for waived nonmember participants who need financial assistance. Waived nonmembers who have registered for the convention and whose income is under $30,000 may apply for registration reimbursement. For more information and to apply, please contact awards@mla.org. The deadline for applications is 1 November.
