Checklist for Submitting Resolutions
This document provides a brief summary of the submission requirements for resolutions. Please consult Preparing Resolutions for the Delegate Assembly for a complete description of the association’s resolution process.
Submission Checklist for Resolutions
The initial submission deadline for resolutions is 1 September. The final submission deadline, for supporting signatures only, is 1 October. Both are receipt deadlines. Only MLA members who are in good standing on or through the final submission deadline may submit resolutions or supporting signatures.
The following materials must be submitted by the 1 September deadline to the chair of the Delegate Assembly Organizing Committee (DAOC) in care of the coordinator of governance at the MLA office. Materials may be submitted by postal mail or e-mail. See below for address information. The proposer of record must identify himself or herself and provide full contact information.
- text of the resolution (limited to 200 words, inclusive of preamble, if any, and resolved clause or clauses)
- at least 10 of the 100 required supporting signatures (see note 1, below)
- "material that provides evidence in support of the resolution's claims" (MLA constitution, art. 11.C.4.b; see note 2 below)
Note 1: Only MLA members who are in good standing on or through the final 1 October submission deadline may offer their signatures in support of a resolution. Signatures may be submitted in any of the following ways: (1) The proposer of record may gather original signatures in advance and submit them by postal mail along with the resolution text and supporting materials, to arrive at the MLA office by 1 September. (2) An MLA member who wishes to sign a resolution may send an original signature separately by postal mail, to arrive at the MLA office by 1 September. (3) An MLA member may e-mail a statement of support for a resolution from the address recorded in his or her membership record to governance@mla.org.
Note 2: The proposer of record should submit all the material that he or she deems necessary to support the resolution’s claims. The supporting material should not take the form of a list of URLs. The supporting material may be submitted either by mail or in electronic form (PDF files or MS Word files are strongly preferred). Faxed materials are not acceptable.
Submitting Signatures to Meet the 1 October Deadline
Once the initial submission deadline has passed, current MLA members may submit their supporting signatures in any of the following ways: (1) by mailing an original signature to the association office so that the mailing arrives on or before 1 October, (2) by e-mailing an individual statement of support to governance@mla.org from the address that is recorded in the sender's MLA membership record, or (3) by using the form at the MLA website that has been created for the collection of resolution signatures.
